Meet The All-New Kia EV6 - Long Range & Ultra-Fast Charging

Meet The All-New Kia EV6 - Long Range & Ultra-Fast Charging

Kia has announced that it plans to launch a whopping seven new electric cars by 2027. The Korean brand will focus more heavily on electric cars and sustainable motoring, switch to more sustainable methods of manufacture and place more weight on recycled materials and renewable energy in its manufacturing process. The all-new Kia EV6, the first of this list of next-gen electric vehicles, is the real kick-off of this aspirational plan.

Built on the firm’s all-new E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) underpinnings, this complete transformation will ostensibly allow for a maximum range of over 300 miles, and amazingly fast charge times to boot.

Meet the Kia EV6

The EV6 offers a more dynamic, sportier tone for Kia. The EV6’s curvy coupe-style immediately sets that tone - contrasting to the more angular aesthetic of the related Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover.

This is Kias first purpose-made electric car. The E-GMP system has been formulated with sister brands Hyundai and Genesis, and the Ioniq 5, driving on this platform already, has had impressive reviews - so expect nothing different from the EV6.

Now, down to the nitty-gritty. What does Kia offer up with this next-gen electric vehicle?

Long-distance driving. Range anxiety has been the bane of EV take-up for many drivers, and Kia looks set to put paid to that, with that, with a preliminary development target range of a staggering 328 miles.

But that mileage doesn’t come with the onus of never-ending charge times, either - Kia is looking to provide ultra-fast charging here, too, with a whopping 60-mile top-up taking as little as 4.5 minutes of charging! It will take less than 18 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. Using a more conventional, residential 11kW AC feed means a full charge will take seven hours and twenty minutes. That makes it perfect for everyday use, too, after overnight top-ups with a home charger installed.

Performance

As mentioned above, Kia is positioning this model as a sporty option. The 0-60mph acceleration of 3.5 seconds helps with this feeling of pace, as well as the intelligent suspension - providing that harder, sportier feel when you want it.

Such punchy acceleration positions this humble Kia with some of the top performance cars. The instant torque electric motors provide brings ICE's some serious competition...

A special feature of the EV6 is that it’s equipped with a special vehicle-to-load function. This allows the car to perform as a portable electricity supply - to be tapped into for any of your daily needs or leisure activities. It can supply up to 3.6KW of electricity, so it can even work as a source of emergency power for your home! Think of it as a portable generator.

Aesthetics & Interior

The E-GMP platform allows for several different interior layouts (due to the flat floor) and means that despite the EV6 being reasonably compact on the exterior, the interior is super-spacious, mimicking the dimensions of a mid-to-large SUV.

The EV6 offers up dual curved 12.3” displays, allowing for clear and unobstructed visibility, and intuitive usage. The sharp, responsive infotainment is also full of further features.

The Head-Up display is a new Augmented Reality offering, introducing a VR display on the windscreen to help guide you to your destination, with all the key information you’ll need for a hassle-free trip.

Sustainability

As well as developing this electric tech, Kia are working on bringing sustainable practice through manufacture and into the vehicle’s interiors. The seats, therefore, are made from recycled PET plastic bottles, high-quality vegan leather, or suede.

The drive

Especially in Eco mode, the EV6 drove in a completely predictable and trustworthy way, allowing you to easily gauge how it was using up its range. Utilise the i-pedal too to maximise the car’s regenerative braking, allowing you to top up the battery whilst driving, through otherwise wasted energy. It’s really intuitive and allows for one-pedal driving, which is perfect around town.

As mentioned, the EV6 does set you up for a firm ride, making the drive feel just that bit more engaging and exciting. The all-wheel-drive versions offer up a really strong performance, too - made even more impressive by its range and charging capacities.

Conclusion

The new EV6 is set up to be a really impressive new EV option. Set up on the already-renowned E-GMP platform, the new model offers novelty in terms of range, charge times and interior dimensions. Dinkier on the outside than an SUV but with a similar interior capacity, this looks to be a model with multi-market appeal, as it will function as a city drive but also has legs for the road.

Maybe the EV6 isn't quite your taste. In that case, you aren't short of alternatives such as the Mustang Mach-E - a fully electric SUV which is a modern spin on the classic Mustang.

All in all, Kia is accelerating in its quest to be market-leading in the EV sector, and this model is just the beginning. A brand to watch if sustainability is the watchword for your next car choice.
